UNTITLED BOOK DESIGN AND LAYOUT
for this project we were tasked to illustrate the book
UNTITLED PROJECT - POEM ILLUSTRATION
Untitled is a poem by Matt Mullican. The poem is a reflection of a woman's life from her birth up to her death.
for this project we were tasked to illustrate the book using callouts, imagery and different element to hit the underline message behind the lines of the poem.
My role in this project was that of the art director. Working along one designer, we decided to do a scrapbook which would give room for both our styles of the design to play well together. For the overall look of the scrapbook we used a skeuomorphic style were we made each element feel as real as possible.
UNTITLED PROJECT - POEM SPREADS
For the spreads we used skills as photo compositing, element creation and illustration. The Arrangement of the imagery and element is based on the principles of scrapbooking which is adding, gluing and taping things such as pictures, stickers, cards, flowers, etc.
One of the big driving points of the book is the reflection of life, by choosing scrapbooking the book illustrated itself and helped to portray the overall meaning to something physical.
UNTITLED PROJECT - POEM SPREADS
Through out the spreads we wanted to connect to both the meaning and the feeling of each of the line in the poem so to bring the book to life we used the lines of the poem to create the elements in the spreads.
Another Idea we play with was increasing the level of maturity in each page to show the passage of time and a true reflection of life. To really sell the point of maturing through the pages we decided to have different people working on the scrapbook that are important in the woman's life such as her mom and her daughter. staring the first page with her mother it gave chance for the pages the main character completed to be loosen fun and have the hint of youth. and as she ages and continues the scrapbook you see her maturity with the layout of elements in the spreads. Lastly having the daughter pick up the scrapbook as her mother the main focal point of the poem is unable to, helps show her full life from beginning to end.
this was a cool project to work on, lots of work and research went into this. I hope you enjoyed the process of illustrating the book and the book itself.
